Vaughn Bode (1941-1975) was a American cartoonist and illustrator famous for his creation of Cheech Wizard, and his ensemble of characters lizards (pucks), voluptuous woman. Shunned by the big power houses of comics (Marvel and D.C.) he helped grow the underground comics scene with the likes of Robert Crumb. His prolific body of work, from 1963 till his untimely death in 1975, was published in underground newspapers and men’s magazines such as Witzend, Heavy Metal, Cavalier, East Village Over, and National Lampoon.
In very early 1980s Bode’s characters were adopted by the New York graffiti writers, becoming a permeant feature in graffiti ever since.
It’s through graffiti that introduces many people to the work of Bodē, long before they have seen his comics. Classic Lines Redux is a collection of Bodē’s characters painted by graffiti writers from around the world, their interpretation of these iconic characters. All images are collected from graffiti magazines and books published between 2001-2023.
